Guiding master’s students through their final dissertation a transferable skill
Over the past decade, I have had the privilege of guiding more than 150 international master's students through the final three months of their degree programmes, supporting them as they completed their dissertations. These students, who travelled to Scotland from across the globe, demonstrated remarkable curiosity and dedication to personal and professional growth at a pivotal stage in their careers.
Their diverse perspectives have contributed significantly to my own professional development. The majority pursued research topics related to leadership, organisational change, staff engagement, and global strategic management. Each student brought unique insights, teaching me valuable lessons on nurturing emerging talent and honouring individual growth.
My engagement with the Adam Smith Business School at the University of Glasgow focused on ensuring that each student’s final three months were both productive and rewarding. This experience has expanded my capabilities as a coach, educator, and facilitator of learning.
Reflecting on my background in management, I initially lacked hands-on experience in guiding students through the dissertation process. However, when the opportunity arose in 2015, I drew inspiration from the methods of my own MBA and PhD supervisors, adopting traits from their guidance approach—a decision that proved highly beneficial.
The impact of positive role models is often far-reaching, shaping not only our own professional journeys but also influencing countless others. With every student I mentor, I envision future leaders—CEOs, entrepreneurs, and agents of social change—who will contribute meaningfully to society.
